THE URTHLINGS - HOLIDAY WISHES!
"I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. "
~Charles Dickens

THE OBSERVATORY - ENTRY # 0032 : GOODBYE FOR NOW...
By MRAM
December 12, 2009
Tiger Woods is human.
Anybody that thought otherwise probably thinks that the 'Tooth Fairy' still patrols the night skies keeping an eye out for discarded molars and incisors.
Tiger also announced Friday that he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the sport he has dedicated most of his life to.
Good move.
I say that with the assumption that he will try to repair the damage he has caused his family with the same dedication that he has shown in becoming the world's # 1 golfer. If he can do that, then he will be fine.
Am I disappointed? Of course. But not like a parent that just found out that their child just robbed a bank. More like a parent looking at a bad report card.
The only people he hurt are his friends and family. He does not owe the public anything.
We are all guilty of building these sports icons into these god-like beings incapable of any wrong doing. For example, Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant. We are also all guilty of wanting to see the mighty fall after we have built them up. I try to model myself after athletes I take a liking to by how they play. NOT by how they live their personal lives.
We, as fans, are all on the outside looking in and that's how it should remain. Who did Tiger spend his time with? How many women were there?
Who cares?
That really is none of our business.
Tiger Woods has to rebuild his family and personal life. If that means saying goodbye to Golf for now, so be it. If he is really sincere in "doing whatever it takes" to make Elin (his wife) happy again, then this is the path he must take. The path he SHOULD take.
There are plenty of stories on how a Tiger got his stripes. We all know how this one lost his.
Tiger Woods is not perfect. Nobody is.
Tiger Woods is human.

THE OBSERVATORY - ENTRY # 0031: WISHES & DEDICATION
By MRAM

Birthday Wishes in memory of Elias P. Granillo 12/5/34 - 12/21/08
"When a person you love passes away Look to the night sky on a clear day. The star that to you, appears to be bright, Will be your loved one, Looking upon you during the night. The lights of heaven are what shows through As your loved one watches all that you do. When you feel lonely for the one that you love, Look to the Heavens in the night sky above."
I would like to take this time to remember someone very special on his birthday. Although he is no longer with us, he will never be forgotten. I know that I will not forget him.
I am glad and thankful to have known him and very grateful to have received his blessing to love and care for one of his own. All I can hope for is that I can live up to the expectations of being able to raise and take care of a family as he did and as my own father taught me and still continues to teach me.
On this day, I will remember him and thank him for all that he has done, his inspiration and for bringing the love of my life into this world. That is a debt that I can never repay...
But I will continue to try.
THE OBSERVATORY - ENTRY # 0030: "WHAPAH!"
We've been to his stand up shows in the past, listened to his CDs and watched his old show on ABC, of course.
It was a standard live taping format for a late night talk show. We were treated to live music from the house band: Michael Bearden & The Ese' Vatos (GREAT band, by the way) watched interviews with actress Eva Mendez, actor/comedian Craig Robinson (The Office) and listened to the jaw-dropping singing voice from the current Queen Of R & B, Mary J. Blige. And one cannot forget the comedic talents of the man himself, George Lopez. (CHOW!)
All in all it was a fabulous show.
But...
...THAT was not the best part.
At the end of the show taping and several promo clip shootings later, George...er, MISTER Lopez felt a little 'uppity'. He was beaming and having a real great time. He was going on about how he loved the audience and wished that he could take everyone out to party, or bring some alcohol into the studio to get everybody plastered. You know, standard love from a star wanting to show appreciation for his/her fans. I would not have thought any more of it if no event happened. We both enjoyed the day and were content.
The thing is that George WAS serious.
He honestly wanted to do something special for the audience that night.
After some discussion with his producer and staff, they came up with something:
Dinner for everyone at George's expense (The Show's expense, in other words...LOL) Now there were close to 350 people in the audience and they were really trying to find a place local that would be able to accommodate that group number.
Again, I have to say that I would not have thought any less of the man if these plans fell through.
I've been a fan of his and will continue to be one.
Then finally, he made this announcement:
"Everybody here is treated to dinner and drinks at the GORDON BIERSCH in Burbank. All expenses paid courtesy of ME! Just tell the manager that I sent you!"
There was stunned silence then a roar of approval from the 350 fans!
We were all obviously happy, albeit very skeptical.
My wife & I decided to call his bluff.
We drove from the studio to the establishment in great anticipation. When we arrived, my wife and I looked at each other and agreed that if this was just a big joke, that we would just sit down and have dinner anyway and just reflect on the fun day.
We walked up to the hostess, and said " George Lopez...um...sent us?"
We were then walked to our seats and were told that we could order anything on the menu.
(damn.)
...and it never came.
Thank you so much, George Lopez for a great day and making the eve of our 7 year anniversary that much more special.
My wife and I listened to George Lopez's CD in the car on our very first date as an ice breaker and 7 years later, the man basically treated us both out to dinner!
Go figure... =)
